As the most north-westerly and fifth largest of the Canary Islands, La Palma offers tourists many attractions, for example the Tuburiente caldera, a geological feature that is part of the Caldera de Tuburiente National Park, one of four national parks located in the Canaries. The caldera measures about 10 km across, its highest point being the Roque de los Muchachos on the northern wall, which has an altitude of 2,426 meters. La Palma's caldera is one of the world's largest craters. It's possible to get there by car. The Roque de los Muchachos Observatory is also close to the summit. Climbing and hiking are popular on the island, as are water sports. Beaches on the island are black due to volcanic activity in the past.
